We will help Boards typically examine the following:
- Roles and responsibilities. The extent to which the Board and its committees are successful in fulfilling their key roles and responsibilities.
- Structures and procedures. The extent to which the Board and its committees adhere to best practice in their
structure and procedures.
- Appropriate board behaviours. The extent, to which the culture of the Board and committees, and the behaviour patterns of individual directors, is supportive of the effective functioning of the Board.
In embarking upon a Board evaluation process, the Board must decide on the extent to which the various aspects are to be evaluated and whether the process is to be conducted in-house or using external facilitators.
For Boards enjoying a strong and respected leadership, and a high level of trust between Board members, Board evaluation is likely to be a positive and rewarding experience. Equally, it must be recognised that the impact of Board evaluation on a dysfunctional Board could be unsettling. At ABS Consulting, we will assist you to link Board development strategy to other aspects of corporate strategy in order to ensure that the Board is able to maximise its contribution in ensuring the future success of the organization.
To assist organisations in undertaking in-house board evaluations, ABS Consulting provides a Board Governance Analysis questionnaire that allows individual Board members to assess a number of critical components of the Board’s workings and structure.
The resultant report is divided into a number of sections. Within each section,
the report details how the various respondents have rated the Board and its
functions and its effectiveness.
